Java/j#(same thing just uses visual studio as an IDE) was developed by sun Microsystems c# is basically just Microsoft's rip off of the language. They are both object oriented languages and if you learn one you will still be able to do the other really easily. Only real differences are C# is Microsoft and uses .NET environment java not microsoft and uses java runtime environment.
References :
What are the practical applications for programming languages such as C# Visual Basic and J#(Java)?
I'm going to start college in August, I'm going for programming, it's something I have enjoyed messing around with, but I want to get more in depth with it. So before I choose a language to dive into I want to know what are the practical applications of each language. What is it most commonly used for. I know there are a wide range of uses for any major programming language, but if you enlighten me on them I would appreciate it.
